EVT1A – Emergency Vehicle Systems

Emergency Vehicle Systems is the foundational course in the California Fire Mechanics Academy’s Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification pathway. It introduces technicians to the essential systems, components, and responsibilities involved in maintaining and repairing fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles.

The EVT1A course is designed as the entry point for mechanics pursuing certification through California State Fire Training (SFT).  This weeklong program provides a structured foundation in the inspection, maintenance, repair and performance testing of emergency vehicles and systems, preparing students for both practical fieldwork and certification testing.

By the end of EVT1A, participants will be able to:

Identify the roles and responsibilities of an emergency vehicle technician, including safety, compliance, and fleet management considerations.  Inspect, maintain, and repair chassis systems and components, ensuring vehicles meet operational and safety standards. Evaluate cab and body systems, including structural integrity, safety equipment, and operator interfaces.  Service tanks and accessories, with emphasis on water tanks, foam systems, and related hardware.  Apply NFPA standards and manufacturer guidelines to real-world maintenance and repair tasks.

Course Modules

  • Introduction to Emergency Vehicle Technician Responsibilities

  • Professional standards, safety practices, and technician duties.

  • Overview of EVT certification pathways.

  • Chassis Systems and Components

  • Frame, suspension, steering, axles, and braking systems.

  • Preventive maintenance and troubleshooting techniques.

Required Texts and References:

Students are expected to have access to the following resources:

  • Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook, 4th Edition (Jones & Bartlett)

  • NFPA 1900: Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus (2024)

  • NFPA 1910: Standard for Inspection, Maintenance, Refurbishment, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles (2024)

Certification Pathway:

EVT1A is the first of three courses in the EVT Level I certification series:

  • EVT1A – Emergency Vehicle Systems

  • EVT1B – Electrical Systems A

  • EVT1C – Pumps and Accessories

Completion of EVT1A, along with the other modules, qualifies students to test for EVT Level I certification through State Fire Training

Why EVT1A Matters:

EVT1A lays the groundwork for a career in emergency vehicle maintenance. By mastering the fundamentals of chassis, cab, body, and tank systems, technicians gain the confidence and technical expertise to ensure that fire apparatus remain safe, reliable, and mission-ready.
