EVT1B – Electrical Systems a
Electrical Systems A is the second course in the California Fire Mechanics Academy’s Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I certification pathway. It provides technicians with the knowledge and skills to inspect, diagnose, and maintain low-voltage electrical systems in fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles. This course builds on the foundation of EVT1A by focusing on the 12-volt electrical systems that power and control critical functions in emergency vehicles. Students gain hands-on experience with wiring, circuits, batteries, charging systems, and diagnostic tools, preparing them to troubleshoot and maintain the complex electrical systems that keep fire apparatus operational. This course is recognized by California State Fire Training (SFT) and is a required component of the EVT Level I certification series.
By the end of EVT1B, participants will be able to:
Identify and describe the components of low-voltage electrical systems in emergency vehicles.
Inspect, test, and maintain batteries, alternators, starters, and related charging systems.
Interpret wiring diagrams and schematics to trace and troubleshoot circuits.
Apply diagnostic tools such as digital multimeters (DVOM) to identify faults.
Perform preventive maintenance to reduce electrical failures in the field.
Comply with NFPA standards and manufacturer specifications for electrical system maintenance.
Course Modules
Introduction to Electrical Systems
Principles of electricity, safety practices, and technician responsibilities.
Batteries and Power Supply
Battery construction, testing, charging, and replacement.
Starting and Charging Systems
Alternators, starters, regulators, and troubleshooting methods.
Wiring and Circuitry
Connectors, relays, fuses, switches, and circuit protection.

Use of DVOMs, schematics, and systematic fault isolation.
Required Texts and References:
Student Supplement provided by CFMA.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – required for all hands-on activities.
Digital Multimeter (DVOM) – students must bring their own.
Certification Pathway:
EVT1A is the first of three courses in the EVT Level I certification series:
EVT1A – Emergency Vehicle Systems
EVT1B – Electrical Systems A
EVT1C – Pumps and Accessories
Completion of EVT1B, along with EVT1A and EVT1C, qualifies students to test for EVT Level I certification through State Fire Training.
Why EVT1B Matters:
Electrical systems are among the most common sources of apparatus downtime. EVT1B equips technicians with the practical skills and diagnostic confidence to keep vehicles in service, reduce costly repairs, and ensure that fire apparatus are ready when emergencies strike.
