EVT1C – pumps & accessories
Pumps & Accessories is the third course in the California Fire Mechanics Academy’s Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I certification pathway. It provides technicians with the knowledge and hands-on skills to inspect, maintain, repair, and performance test fire apparatus pumps and their associated systems. This course focuses on the heart of fire apparatus operations: the pump system. Students learn how to properly service and troubleshoot pumps, priming systems, plumbing, valves, gauges, interlocks, and related accessories. The course blends classroom instruction with factory-supported training from leading pump manufacturers, ensuring participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical, real-world experience. This course is recognized by California State Fire Training (SFT) and is a required component of the EVT Level I certification series.
By the end of EVT1C, participants will be able to:
Identify and describe the components of fire apparatus pump systems and accessories.
Inspect, maintain, and repair pumps, priming systems, valves, and plumbing.
Test and calibrate gauges, indicators, and warning systems to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Service seals, packing, and interlocks to maintain pump integrity and safety.
Apply NFPA standards and manufacturer specifications to pump maintenance and testing.
Course Modules
Pump Fundamentals
Types of fire pumps, operating principles, and safety considerations.
Priming Systems and Plumbing
Inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of priming systems and water pathways.
Valves, Gauges, and Indicators

Certification Pathway:
EVT1C is the third of three courses in the EVT Level I certification series:
EVT1A – Emergency Vehicle Systems
EVT1B – Electrical Systems A
EVT1C – Pumps & Accessories
Completion of EVT1C, along with EVT1A and EVT1B, qualifies students to test for EVT Level I certification through State Fire Training.
Why EVT1C Matters:
Pumps are the lifeline of fire suppression operations. EVT1C equips technicians with the specialized expertise to keep pumps and accessories reliable under extreme conditions, ensuring that fire apparatus are always ready to perform when lives and property are at stake.
