EVT2A – Electrical systems b

Electrical Systems B is the advanced electrical course in the California Fire Mechanics Academy’s Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level II certification pathway. It builds on EVT1B by focusing on electronic controls, instrumentation, and advanced diagnostic techniques for emergency vehicle electrical systems. The course provides technicians with the knowledge and hands-on skills to inspect, maintain, and repair low-voltage electrical systems, electronic controls, and instrumentation in fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles. Students expand their understanding of wiring, circuits, and charging systems by learning how to diagnose and service more complex electronic and multiplexing systems that are increasingly common in modern apparatus. This course is certified through California State Fire Training (SFT) and is a required component of the EVT Level II certification series.

By the end of EVT2A, participants will be able to:

  • Inspect, test, and repair advanced low-voltage electrical systems.

  • Diagnose and service electronic controls and instrumentation, including multiplexing systems.

  • Interpret complex wiring diagrams and schematics for troubleshooting.

  • Use advanced diagnostic tools such as digital storage oscilloscopes (DSO), scanners, and power probes.

  • Apply NFPA standards and manufacturer specifications to ensure compliance and safety.

Course Modules

  • Review of Electrical Systems A

  • Core concepts from EVT1B, safety, and diagnostic review.

  • Electronic Controls and Instrumentation

  • Multiplex systems, sensors, modules, and control units.

  • Advanced Diagnostics

  • Oscilloscopes, scanners, and systematic troubleshooting.

  • Circuit Analysis and Repair

  • Complex wiring, relays, and electronic fault isolation.

  • Hands-On Activities

  • Testing, calibration, and repair of real-world apparatus systems.

Required Texts and References:

  • Student Supplement provided by CFMA.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – required for all hands-on activities.

  • Digital Multimeter (DVOM) – students must bring their own.

  • Access to oscilloscopes, scanners, and test equipment provided during class.

Certification Pathway:

EVT2A is the first course in the EVT Level II certification series.

Completion of EVT2A, along with other Level II requirements, qualifies students to test for EVT Level II certification through State Fire Training.

Why EVT2A Matters:

As fire apparatus become more technologically advanced, electrical and electronic systems are among the most frequent sources of downtime. EVT2A equips technicians with the advanced diagnostic skills and technical expertise to keep vehicles reliable, reduce costly repairs, and ensure that apparatus are always ready to respond.
